One hundred and thirty-six participants (78 siblings and 58 children) completed a semistructured interview, and 123 (93%) were returned for a follow-up interview 6 months later. The impact of chronic illness on the family was explored, and factors affecting the impact were identified. Overall, siblings and children did not feel that the family was affected by the chronic illness. The positive aspects of being a family member of a person with chronic illness were discussed, with siblings and children mainly reporting increased understanding and emotional attachment, but increased worry about the future being reported by siblings. Children were more positive about the impact of the illness on the family, although this was also negative in some instances. The majority of siblings and children experienced no effect on their mental or physical health. However, siblings and children reported that the impact of chronic illness in the family on their mental and physical health was more pronounced when the family was experiencing stress or distress.Analysis of linear conductance changes in the guinea pig femoral artery. Both electrical and mechanical responses of the femoral artery were studied in the superfused guinea pig. The electrical responses were measured as changes in linear conductance (Gt) and mechanical responses were studied as contractile and relaxation responses to drugs and transmural stimulation. The result of the mechanical studies indicated that Gt changes were due to a smooth muscle contraction and contraction could be elicited by either transmural stimulation or drugs acting via the cellular membrane. The electrical studies indicated that Gt changes were due to a smooth muscle contraction, but the electrical response was due to a primary depolarization that appeared to be unrelated to the contractile response.
